Keeping Healthy Eating Simple on a Busy Week
A few unglamorous habits that keep me eating reasonably well when life is full.
I like good food, and I do not follow any particular diet. What I have learned is that eating well during a busy week has much less to do with willpower than with planning a little ahead.
Decide once
The hardest moment to make a good food choice is when I am hungry and short on time. So I try to make most of those decisions in advance. A bit of time on the weekend to plan the week and pick up groceries means that on a hectic Tuesday the healthy option is already the easy option.
Cook in batches
I am not a chef, but I can roast a pan of vegetables, cook a big batch of grains and grill some protein. Having those basics in the refrigerator makes it simple to put together a decent lunch or dinner in a few minutes. Leftovers are underrated.
Keep good snacks around
Most of my less healthy eating used to happen mid-afternoon. Keeping fruit, nuts or yogurt within reach solved most of that. If the only thing nearby is a vending machine, the vending machine usually wins.
Water first
Living in Florida, I have learned that a lot of what feels like hunger is actually thirst, especially in summer. I try to drink water steadily through the day, and it helps with energy as much as anything else I do.
Leave room for real life
I eat out, I go to dinners and events, and I enjoy dessert. Healthy eating that cannot survive a birthday party is not going to last. My goal is for most meals during the week to be solid so the occasional indulgence does not matter much.
Read the label, not the front of the box
Packaging is designed to sell. I have gotten into the habit of flipping things over and looking at the ingredients and serving sizes rather than trusting the claims on the front. It is not about obsessing over every number. It is just a quick way to avoid surprises, and over time it has changed what ends up in my cart.
Progress, not perfection
Some weeks go better than others. When a week goes sideways, I do not try to make up for it with something extreme. I just get back to the basics the next day: plan a little, cook a little, drink water and keep it simple.
